Enjoying the Sun in South Beach!

This past weekend we flew to Miami for some fun and relaxation! It was also a great way to escape from the bitterly cold Michigan winter. We met up with our good friends Chris and Alice from North Carolina and had a fabulous time!

We stayed at the Hotel Astor which was conveniently located in the Art Deco area of South Beach.

The hotel lobby was very chic!

One of the first things we did was stroll along the beach and enjoy the warm sun.

We also walked down Lincoln Avenue and enjoyed a view of downtown Miami from the other side of Biscayne Bay.

Even though it is very touristy and cheesy, I really wanted to go on the Duck Tour... the "Ducks" are amphibious vehicles that can travel on both land and water. Justin, Chris, and Alice were somewhat skeptical but agreed to go with me!

The tour was actually pretty interesting... we saw many of the classic tourist spots, including the home where Scarface was filmed, Versace's mansion, the Miami Ink tattoo parlor, Millionare's Row, and Star Island.

We sailed through Biscayne Bay and enjoyed seeing all of the fancy houses and yachts.

We also saw a great view of downtown Miami!

This is supposed to be one of the largest houses on the bay... it costs over $50 million!

We also saw Shaquille O'Neal's house... he has a small statue of himself near the dock--- look above the man's red visor.

On sunday morning, Justin and I went for a run along the Miami beach boardwalk, and then we walked down to the beach with Chris and Alice.

Justin and Alice got in the water, but Chris and I preferred to stay on dry land.

Later that day, we went walking down Espanola Way.

We found a wonderful authentic French restaurant that served savory and sweet crepes!

My crepe was filled with chicken, spinach, and mushrooms and was absolutely delicious! I also split a nutella and strawberry crepe with Justin for dessert.

We also visited the Miami Botanical Garden... it was a nice, quiet retreat from the more frenzied South Beach area.

We walked down Ocean Drive one more time on monday morning to enjoy the sun and palm trees before returning to Michigan. It was a great trip!

The Rufeners Come for a Visit!

Bryce, Lynn, Sarae, Kadin, and Tucker drove through the wintery weather all the way from Wisconsin to visit us this weekend! We had not seen them since our Labor Day weekend camping trip last year, so we were really excited to get to see them again. The highlight of the weekend was spending the day at the North American International Auto Show. It is a HUGE event... the carpet they use for the show is enough to cover the length of 750 football fields!

Sarae checking out a Mercedes!

I think Bryce's favorite was the A4!

I lost track of how many cars we sat in...

The Hummers were a popular attraction!

Lynn browsing for a future replacement for the red Suburban...

Tucker was a perfectly well behaved house guest and even did some tricks for us!
